Pick a common pillow or cushion shape, enter how many you are filling, and get a practical 6 lb / 8 lb pack recommendation. #### How the estimate works The calculator starts with approximate project volume, then multiplies by about 10.5 lb per cubic foot of buckwheat hull fill. Soft, medium, and firm settings adjust that number. It is an honest planning estimate, not a promise that every pillow maker will like the same firmness. Adjustable projects benefit from having a little extra fill on hand. #### Need help choosing? For uncertain projects, start medium and keep spare hulls in the resealable bag. Add hulls for more lift, or remove a handful at a time for a softer pillow. support@prairiefill.com can help with unusual sizes. ## How to Wash a Buckwheat Pillow Source: https://prairiefill.com/blog-wash ### How to Wash a Buckwheat Pillow Wash the fabric, never the hulls. A careful transfer keeps the loose fill dry and lets you tune the pillow again when it is clean. By the Prairie Fill family - Published June 28, 2026 - Updated July 10, 2026 A buckwheat pillow usually contains two parts: a washable or spot-cleanable fabric shell and loose buckwheat hull fill. The dark, papery hulls should stay dry. Putting the filled pillow in a washer can soak the hulls, damage their structure, create clumps, and trap moisture deep inside the pillow. The safe method is simple: remove the fill, clean only the appropriate fabric pieces, and refill after every seam is dry. Plan the transfer before opening the liner. A standard pillow can hold several pounds of light, mobile hulls, and an improvised grocery bag is much harder to control than a wide clean tote with a lid. **If the care label conflicts with this guide, follow the product maker.** Covers and liners vary in fiber, dye, zipper, quilting, coating, and construction. Prairie Fill sells loose fill, not a finished pillow, so we cannot set the wash method for every shell. #### Step 1: Empty the pillow completely Choose a dry room without a strong draft. Set a wide clean tote, large bowl, or intact storage bag below the pillow opening. Unzip the outer cover and inner liner slowly, then use a scoop or funnel if pouring directly would scatter hulls. Move every loose hull you can reach. Check corners, zipper tape, and seam allowances. Close the temporary container as soon as the liner is empty so moisture, pets, and household debris cannot reach the fill. #### Step 2: Clean the empty cover and liner correctly Read the maker's care label first. Covers vary: some cotton shells tolerate a cold machine wash, while dyed, quilted, wool, or structured covers may require spot cleaning or hand washing. Do not assume the liner follows the same instructions as the removable outer case. Close zippers before machine washing so teeth and sliders are protected. Use a gentle detergent appropriate for the fabric and avoid adding fragrance or treatment products that the cover maker does not recommend. #### Step 3: Keep the stored hulls dry and inspect them While the cover is being cleaned, keep the hull container closed in a dry place. If you open it to inspect the fill, look for intact papery pieces, a neutral dry agricultural odor, and no clumps or visible moisture. Dry ventilation can air out normal stored-material odor, but sunlight is not a substitute for cleaning and does not make agricultural fill sterile. Do not mist, rinse, steam, or deodorize the hulls with liquid. #### Step 4: Refill only when every fabric layer is fully dry Air-dry or machine-dry the cover exactly as its care label allows. Feel the zipper tape, seams, and thick folded edges--not only the broad fabric panel. A cover that feels dry on the surface can still hold moisture in those areas. Refill over a clean tote or drop cloth. Add most of the saved hulls, close the zipper, and test the pillow. Remove a cup at a time for a lower, softer feel or add fresh dry hulls for more loft. Close the liner securely before replacing the outer case. #### Spot cleaning versus a full wash A small surface mark does not always justify emptying the entire pillow. If the cover maker allows spot cleaning, use the least moisture needed and prevent liquid from reaching the liner. Blot rather than saturate, and let the area dry completely before use. A removable outer case makes this easier because it can be cleaned without disturbing the inner hull liner. Empty the pillow for a full wash when odor, body oil, or a larger spill has reached a washable shell. If liquid reached the hull compartment, inspect the fill instead of assuming the cover protected it. Separate dry hulls from any damp section so one wet patch is not mixed through the whole container. #### What to do with damp or soaked hulls Humidity and soaking are different problems. Hulls that have only been exposed briefly to humid air may return to a normal dry condition in a clean, well-ventilated room. Spread a small quantity thinly only if there is no musty odor, clumping, visible growth, or contamination, and do not put them back into fabric until completely dry. If the fill was soaked, sat wet, smells musty, or has visible contamination, replace it. A warm surface does not prove the center of a pile is dry. Baking, microwaving, or putting hulls in a clothes dryer introduces fire, scorching, dust, and equipment risks and is not a Prairie Fill care method. #### Signs the fill may need refreshing or replacement Normal use gradually polishes and compresses hulls. You may first notice the pillow sitting lower or needing more frequent reshaping. If the fill remains dry and clean, adding a small amount of fresh hulls can restore loft without replacing everything. Consider full replacement when much of the fill has become flattened or powdery, an unwanted odor persists after the cover is clean, moisture reached the hulls, or debris entered during transfer. Minor color variation and a small amount of natural dust are normal in agricultural material; a dramatic change in condition is not. #### Make the next cleaning easier - Use a durable zippered inner liner plus a removable outer case. - Keep the pillow away from wet hair, floor moisture, and open drinks. - Store spare fill closed in its resealable bag in a dry indoor place. - Record how many pounds feel right before emptying a successful pillow. - Place the liner inside a clean tote whenever opening its zipper. **The one rule to remember:** keep hulls dry at every step. Wash only the empty fabric layer that its care label says can be washed. Source: https://prairiefill.com/blog-zafu ### How Much Buckwheat Hull Fill for a Zafu? Start from the cushion's real dimensions, then tune the seat a little at a time. One 6 lb pack covers many standard round zafu projects. By the Prairie Fill family - Published June 28, 2026 - Updated July 10, 2026 A zafu should lift the hips without feeling like a rigid block. Buckwheat hulls work well because the loose pieces move while you shape the seat and settle against one another under weight. You can remove fill to lower the cushion or add it back when the fabric relaxes. There is no single correct number of pounds for every zafu. Diameter, finished height, sidewall construction, pleats, crescent versus round shape, fabric tension, and preferred posture all change capacity. The practical approach is to estimate, fill gradually, and stop when the cushion supports your position without forcing it. #### Calculator-based starting weights Prairie Fill's [fill calculator](https://prairiefill.com/calculator) uses an approximate density of 10.5 lb per cubic foot and a 0.78 shape factor for a zafu. For the calculator's 14 x 14 x 5 inch preset, that produces about 4.6 lb at medium firmness and 5.5 lb at firm. A [6 lb pack](https://prairiefill.com/product-6lb) therefore gives enough to build one typical round zafu and keep a small adjustment reserve. | Cushion | Medium estimate | Firm estimate | Practical note | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 14-inch round x 5-inch height | 4.6 lb | 5.5 lb | One 6 lb pack is a straightforward start | | 16-inch round x 5-inch height | 6.1 lb | 7.2 lb | An 8 lb pack leaves adjustment fill | | Crescent zafu | Often starts around 4 lb | Often starts around 5 lb | Pattern volume varies; fill and weigh one | The 16-inch figures use the same density, height, shape factor, and firmness multipliers as the calculator. The crescent range is a planning starting point rather than a calculator preset because crescent patterns vary substantially. If your pattern maker supplies a fill weight, use that first. #### Choose height before choosing firmness Adding hulls changes both firmness and seat height. If your hips need more elevation, a taller pattern or more fill may help; if the cushion already sits too high, packing it harder is unlikely to solve the problem. Test on the floor surface and mat you actually use because a soft rug changes how the base feels. Sit long enough to notice whether the front edge presses into the thighs, the pelvis feels unstable, or the cushion flattens more than expected. Remove or add about a cup at a time. Large adjustments make it difficult to tell which change improved the position. #### Round versus crescent zafu A round zafu distributes fill around a central seat and is easy to rotate. Pleated sidewalls can create more usable volume than a flat cylinder with the same headline diameter. A crescent supports the hips while leaving more open space for the heels or ankles, but two crescent patterns with the same width may hold very different amounts. For either shape, a separate inner liner is worth the effort. The outer cover can then be removed for cleaning while the hulls stay contained. Use a strong zipper with a protected pull, and inspect seams before filling. Loose hulls are small enough to escape through a weak closure. #### How to fill without making a mess 1. Place the empty liner inside a wide clean tote or on a drop cloth. 2. Use a scoop or wide-mouth funnel rather than pouring from shoulder height. 3. Add roughly three-quarters of the estimate, close the zipper, and shape the seat. 4. Add smaller amounts until the cushion reaches the intended height and stability. 5. Weigh the successful cushion and write the result down before making more. Do not fill over an open floor drain, near a fan, or beside moisture. Close the bulk bag after each scoop. If you are producing several matching cushions, complete and test one prototype before multiplying its final fill weight. #### Adjusting after the cushion settles Fabric relaxes and hulls polish with use, so a zafu may feel lower after the first weeks. That does not automatically mean all the fill needs replacing. Open the liner over a tote, redistribute the existing hulls, and add a small amount from the reserve. If the seat is too hard, remove fill and store it dry in the resealable bag. Replace hulls that become soaked, musty, contaminated, or heavily crushed. Never wash the fill. Our [buckwheat pillow care guide](https://prairiefill.com/blog-wash) explains how to empty and clean a fabric cover while keeping hulls dry. #### Planning multiple meditation cushions Multiply the tested final weight, not the original guess. Four 14-inch medium zafu are about 18.6 lb by calculator math, but pattern and maker preference can move the real number. Ten are about 46.4 lb. For studio quantities, record the empty liner weight and final filled weight, then use our [bulk hull planning guide](https://prairiefill.com/guide-bulk-hulls) for storage, quality checks, and supplier-fit questions. **Simple starting point:** use one 6 lb pack for a typical 14-inch round zafu, fill gradually, and keep the extra dry for later tuning. For a 16-inch or especially firm cushion, start with an 8 lb pack. The useful question is which feel, sound, weight, and maintenance tradeoffs fit you and your project. By the Prairie Fill family - Published July 10, 2026 - Updated July 10, 2026 Buckwheat hulls, millet hulls, foam, and polyester fiber can all make useful pillows, but they do not behave alike. Loose hull fill can be moved and removed. A foam core has a set shape. Poly-fill gives a soft, familiar loft. Millet is often chosen by people who want a natural loose fill with a smoother, quieter feel than buckwheat. This guide separates practical observations from stronger claims. Pillow research is limited, and preference matters: a field study of common pillow types found no single material that guaranteed comfort or good sleep for everyone. A fill that feels wonderfully stable to one person can feel too firm, noisy, or heavy to another. **On this page** - Quick comparison - What the fills are - Feel and support - Sound and temperature - Weight, care, and lifespan - Who each fill suits #### Quick comparison | Factor | Buckwheat hulls | Millet hulls | Foam | Poly-fill | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Feel | Firm, textured, moldable | Smoother, more fluid, usually softer | Resilient or slow-response, formulation-dependent | Soft, springy, familiar | | Sound | Audible dry rustle when moved | Usually quieter, still not silent | Nearly silent | Nearly silent | | Air spaces | Large gaps between rigid husks | Smaller particles and smaller gaps | Depends on cell structure, perforation, and cover | Airy at first; loft changes with compression | | Weight | Heavy compared with fiber fill | Still a loose agricultural fill; finished weight varies | Varies widely by density and size | Usually the lightest option here | | Adjustability | Easy to add or remove through a zippered liner | Also adjustable in a suitable liner | Fixed core; shredded foam is more adjustable | Add or remove fiber, but even distribution takes work | | Care | Keep fill dry; wash the empty cover | Keep fill dry; follow seller instructions | Follow the foam maker's care limits | Some products are washable; follow the label | | Best use | Firm adjustable pillows, zafu, cushions, positioning | Quieter natural pillows with a softer shifting feel | People wanting a familiar fixed shape | Light, soft pillows and craft stuffing | #### What these fills actually are **Buckwheat hulls are not seed or grain.** They are the dark outer husks removed from the edible groat during milling. The USDA describes groats as kernels with the inedible black hull removed. Good pillow fill should therefore look like small, papery, angular husks--not tan groats, bird seed, or flour. Prairie Fill mechanically separates, air-cleans, and screens its hulls to reduce fines and very small fragments. Millet-hull fill is also a milling byproduct, but the pieces sold for pillows are smaller and move differently. Published head-to-head pillow research is sparse, so claims about millet being "better" should be treated as preference, not settled science. In practical use, people commonly describe millet fill as smoother and quieter, with less of buckwheat's distinctly locked-in texture. Foam is a broad category. Solid polyurethane, memory foam, latex foam, and shredded foam do not share one feel. "Foam sleeps hot" is too broad to be a reliable rule because density, cell structure, perforation, pillow shape, and cover fabric all change the result. Poly-fill is usually polyester fiber arranged to trap air and create loft; it is light and soft but does not hold a hand-shaped contour the way interlocking hulls can. #### Feel and support: stable is not the same as soft Buckwheat hulls slide while you shape the pillow, then press against one another under weight. That produces a stable hollow for the head or a grounded seat in a meditation cushion. You control loft by removing fill, which can be more useful than choosing between "low" and "high" fixed pillows. It also means a new, overfilled hull pillow can feel uncomfortably hard until adjusted. A small study presented in 2023 found buckwheat-skin pillows provided adequate neck support and a larger contact area, while memory foam and latex distributed pressure more evenly in that test. That is a useful reminder, not a promise of pain relief. Pillow height, body size, sleep position, cover construction, and personal comfort all matter. If you need a medical or post-operative support, ask a qualified clinician rather than relying on a fill comparison. Millet is the honest alternative when you like an adjustable natural fill but dislike buckwheat's firm texture. Foam can be a better choice when you want a predictable contour and no shifting particles. Poly-fill is often better for a light guest pillow, decorative cushion, stuffed toy, or craft where softness matters more than a stable contour. #### Sound, airflow, and temperature Buckwheat hulls make a dry-leaf rustle when you reshape them. Most of the sound happens during movement; it is not an electronic hum or continuous noise. Some people stop noticing it, while light sleepers may never like it. Millet usually produces a finer, softer sound, but it is not truly silent. Foam and poly-fill are the clear choices if any particle noise is unacceptable. The open spaces between buckwheat husks allow air to move through the fill when the pillow is shifted or compressed. That construction is why many people choose hull fill for a less enveloping feel. We still avoid guaranteed "cooling" claims: room temperature, pillowcase fabric, protector layers, humidity, and the sleeper have a large effect. A densely packed hull pillow or impermeable protector can undermine the benefit of open fill. #### Weight, care, lifespan, and cost A full-size buckwheat pillow is noticeably heavy. That helps a cushion stay put, but it can be inconvenient for travel, children, or anyone who regularly moves bedding. Millet pillows are also filled with agricultural material and may require substantial fill to maintain loft. Foam weight varies; poly-fill is normally much lighter. Keep any loose hull fill dry. Empty it before washing the cover or liner, and replace fill that becomes soaked, musty, or badly crushed. There is no evidence-based universal replacement date. Inspect condition instead: useful hulls remain dry, springy, and mostly intact; old fill may become polished, flattened, or increasingly powdery. Foam and fiber also age differently by formulation and use, so manufacturer care and replacement guidance wins over a generic timetable. Price comparisons should use the finished project, not a pound-to-pound shortcut. Hull fills may require several pounds, foam is sold by core or volume, and poly-fill is extremely light. Include the cost of a strong zippered liner, shipping, spare fill, and the likelihood that you will adjust or replace material later. #### Which fill is the better fit? ##### Choose buckwheat hulls if... You want firm, shapeable support; you value a refillable pillow; a heavier pillow is acceptable; and a natural rustle does not bother you. Hulls also work well for zafu, bolsters, positioning cushions, draft stoppers, and upholstery experiments where controlled loose fill is useful. ##### Choose millet hulls if... You want an adjustable agricultural fill but prefer a smoother, quieter, less locked-in feel. Buy a small quantity or a finished pillow with a return policy first, because millet and buckwheat preferences are highly personal. ##### Choose foam or poly-fill if... You need near silence, low weight, a familiar soft feel, or a fixed manufactured contour. Foam may suit people who dislike particles moving under the cover. Poly-fill is often the practical value choice for lightweight decorative and craft uses. **Bottom line:** Prairie Fill sells buckwheat hulls, but that does not make them the right answer for everyone. Choose millet for a quieter natural loose fill, foam for a consistent silent shape, or poly-fill for light softness. Choose buckwheat when adjustability, airflow between rigid husks, and stable texture matter more than silence and low weight. #### Allergy and cleanliness questions Buckwheat hulls are a natural agricultural material, and cleaning does not make them medically hypoallergenic. A published study found higher endotoxin levels on the tested buckwheat pillows than on synthetic pillows; that study does not evaluate Prairie Fill products, but it supports careful, non-absolute allergy language. People with buckwheat, dust, asthma, or bedding-material concerns should consult a qualified healthcare professional and may reasonably prefer a synthetic fill. #### Research and definitions - [USDA FGIS: Inspection of Buckwheat](https://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/FGIS9180_69.pdf) -- distinction between the black hull and the edible groat. - [Gordon & Grimmer-Somers: pillow comfort and sleep-quality field study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3076923/) -- pillow performance and preference vary. - [2023 pillow material and pressure study abstract](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10994483/) -- measured differences among buckwheat skin, foam, latex, fiber, and inflatable pillows. - [Endotoxin and house-dust-mite allergen study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2816881/) -- reason to avoid unsupported hypoallergenic claims. By the Prairie Fill family - Published July 10, 2026 - Updated July 10, 2026 "Bulk" can mean four pillows for a small studio, ten zafu for a meditation room, or hundreds of pounds for a manufacturer. Those projects should not receive the same advice. Prairie Fill currently sells resealable 6 lb and 8 lb packs at the listed website prices; we do not publish a separate bulk-discount schedule. This guide helps you decide how much fill the project is likely to use and when our parcel-size packs are--or are not--the practical route. The most important first step is estimating pounds. Buckwheat hulls are light individually but occupy irregular space, and a finished cushion's firmness changes how densely they sit. Counting covers without considering dimensions can leave you far short or with more fill than you can store. **On this page** - Estimate total pounds - Planning table - Turn pounds into packs - Evaluate hull quality - Store bulk fill safely - Choose the right supplier size #### Start with dimensions, count, and firmness Prairie Fill's [fill calculator](https://prairiefill.com/calculator) uses an approximate density of 10.5 lb per cubic foot. It multiplies width, length, and loft, then applies a shape factor because a soft pillow or round cushion is not a rigid rectangular box. The medium firmness setting is the baseline; soft is 82% of that estimate and firm is 118%. That math is transparent on purpose. A 20 x 26 x 2.3 inch standard pillow at the calculator's 0.90 pillow shape factor is about 6.5 lb at medium firmness. Ten identical covers are about 65.4 lb--not "ten bags," because bag size and pillow size are different units. A 14-inch zafu at the 0.78 zafu factor is about 4.6 lb medium or 5.5 lb firm. Patterns, seam allowance, fabric stiffness, chambers, and personal feel can move the result. Treat the number as a purchasing estimate, fill one prototype before a production run, and keep a little adjustment room. If you are replacing fill, weigh the dry fill removed from a successful existing piece; that can be more useful than geometry alone. #### Calculator-consistent planning table These figures use the same dimensions, 10.5 lb/ft^3 density, shape factors, and medium firmness as the calculator. They are not guaranteed finished weights. Use the calculator for custom dimensions and its soft/firm controls. | Project | 1 item | 2 items | 4 items | 10 items | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Standard pillow | 6.5 lb | 13.1 lb | 26.2 lb | 65.4 lb | | Queen pillow | 7.9 lb | 15.8 lb | 31.5 lb | 78.8 lb | | King pillow | 9.8 lb | 19.7 lb | 39.4 lb | 98.4 lb | | 14-inch zafu | 4.6 lb | 9.3 lb | 18.6 lb | 46.4 lb | | 24-inch floor pouf | 15.4 lb | 30.8 lb | 61.6 lb | 154.0 lb | **Ten medium king pillows:** about 98.4 lb by the calculator assumptions. At that scale, prototype one pillow and contact us before placing repeated pack orders so we can confirm whether Prairie Fill is a sensible fit. #### Turn estimated pounds into 6 lb and 8 lb packs Our current choices are the [6 lb pack for $34.99](https://prairiefill.com/product-6lb) and the [8 lb pack for $44.99](https://prairiefill.com/product-8lb), with shipping to the lower 48 states except North Dakota included at checkout. The calculator searches combinations and favors the least extra fill first, then the fewest packs, then cost. That means the recommendation may mix sizes instead of simply dividing by eight. Extra hulls are not necessarily waste. Store them dry in the resealable bag and use them to restore loft after a pillow settles, adjust a second project, or replace a small spill. But do not buy a large cushion's full calculated volume without checking that the cover has a secure liner and fill opening. Loose hulls find small gaps quickly. ##### Prototype before repeating For a classroom, studio, shop, or lodging project, finish one representative item. Record the empty-cover weight, final filled weight, firmness notes, and how much fill remained. Multiply the successful fill weight by the remaining count. This simple production record is more reliable than assuming every "standard" cover holds the same amount. #### What to look for in bulk buckwheat hull fill First, confirm the material is hull--not edible groats or whole seed. Buckwheat hulls are small, dark-brown, papery, three-winged husks. Color and size vary because this is an agricultural material, but a bag should not look like tan kernels or ground flour. Ask how the fill is separated and cleaned. Prairie Fill hulls are mechanically separated, air-cleaned, and screened through a sieve to reduce fines and very small fragments. "Reduce" is the honest verb: natural field dust and small pieces may still be present, and no agricultural fill should be advertised as sterile or universally hypoallergenic. For a large order, examine intact-hull percentage, dust, odor, dryness, and consistency between bags. A few broken pieces are normal. Wetness, musty odor, visible contamination, or a bag dominated by powder is a reason to stop. If your project has a formal material specification, test a representative quantity before approving the full run. #### How to store multiple bags Keep hulls indoors in a clean, dry place, away from floor moisture, leaking walls, and strong odors. Leave unopened fill in its packaging until needed. After opening, close the resealable bag and consider a lidded secondary bin for production areas. Label partial bags with the date opened and project name so fill is not mixed accidentally. Do not wash the hulls. Wash only an empty cover or liner according to its maker's directions, and refill only when every layer is fully dry. If loose hulls become soaked, musty, or clumped, replacement is safer than trying to rescue material for bedding. Our [buckwheat pillow washing guide](https://prairiefill.com/blog-wash) walks through the transfer process. Plan the work area before opening many bags: use a wide clean tote, scoop, funnel, drop cloth, and a vacuum reserved for dry cleanup. Minimize fans and cross-drafts. Close each liner immediately after filling and inspect the zipper and seams before moving the piece. #### When Prairie Fill is--and is not--the right supplier Prairie Fill is a small family business packing in Thompson, North Dakota. Our 6 lb and 8 lb parcel-size bags are practical for DIY makers, refill work, prototypes, small studios, and projects that benefit from resealable units. They are also straightforward when you need to mix sizes around a calculator estimate. A larger industrial supplier may fit better when you need pallet quantities, recurring production contracts, freight appointments, custom bag weights, certificates tied to a manufacturing specification, or the lowest possible per-pound logistics at very high volume. We would rather say that plainly than accept an order that is awkward for both sides. Contact us with total pounds, deadline, destination, and bag-size needs; we will tell you honestly whether our current pack model is practical. #### Bulk-order planning checklist - Measure one actual cover or pattern - Choose soft, medium, or firm - Calculate pounds per item - Build and weigh one prototype - Multiply by the remaining count - Plan a small adjustment reserve - Confirm dry storage space - Share deadline and destination [Compare buckwheat, millet, foam, and poly-fill](https://prairiefill.com/guide-hull-comparison) [How much buckwheat fill for a zafu?](https://prairiefill.com/blog-zafu) [How to wash a buckwheat pillow](https://prairiefill.com/blog-wash) [Use the fill calculator](https://prairiefill.com/calculator) [Discuss a larger project](https://prairiefill.com/contact) [Shop current packs](https://prairiefill.com/shop) ## From the heartland Source: https://prairiefill.com/about ### From the heartland. Create Naturally. Live Simply. Prairie Fill provides clean buckwheat hulls for the pillows, cushions, and handmade projects people use every day. #### A small family business in North Dakota. Prairie Fill is a family-owned business in Thompson, North Dakota. We pack Midwest-grown buckwheat hulls as loose fill for pillows, cushions, meditation cushions, upholstery work, and craft projects. The idea is simple: offer one natural material, describe it plainly, and help people choose a useful amount for the thing they are making or refilling. Before packaging, the hulls are mechanically separated, air-cleaned, and screened through a sieve to reduce fines and very small fragments. We pack them in a large resealable bag with transit-protection packaging so extra fill can be stored between adjustments. Buckwheat hulls are a natural agricultural material, not a manufactured foam. Small differences in color, size, and texture are normal, and a small amount of natural dust may be present. An order includes loose hull fill only; it does not include a pillow cover, liner, or finished cushion. ##### Why loose buckwheat hull fill? The curved, hollow shape of the hulls leaves small air spaces through the fill. The pieces shift when a pillow or cushion is shaped, then settle against one another under weight. That makes the fill breathable, moldable, and adjustable without relying on synthetic foam or polyester fiber. Loose fill also leaves the final feel in the maker's hands. Add hulls for more lift, remove a little for a softer result, and keep the remainder sealed for later. If a project is unusual, our [fill calculator](https://prairiefill.com/calculator) gives a transparent starting estimate and we can help with practical questions. #### Simple fill, handled carefully. 1 ##### Clean, screened hulls Mechanical separation, air cleaning, and screening help reduce fines and fragments before packing. 2 ##### Made for makers Loose fill gives sewists, pillow owners, and meditation cushion makers control over shape and firmness. 3 ##### Plain-spoken support Questions about fill amounts, shipping, or unusual projects go straight to support@prairiefill.com. #### Ready to plan your fill? Everything you need to know about Prairie Fill, shipping, returns, AI-assisted shopping, and using buckwheat hull fill. #### Good information makes natural fill easier. These answers match our current product and policy pages. For a project that does not fit a standard pillow or cushion, use the calculator or contact us. #### Product 4 common questions ##### Where do your hulls come from? Our buckwheat hulls are Midwest-grown and packed in Thompson, North Dakota. They are mechanically separated, air-cleaned, and screened through a sieve to reduce fines and very small fragments before packaging. ##### Do buckwheat hulls have bugs? All of the hulls I'm selling now spent last winter sealed in an unheated trailer in North Dakota, through temperatures down to -20 F. Prairie Fill hulls are mechanically separated, air-cleaned, and screened through a sieve to reduce fines and very small fragments before packaging. I bag every order by hand, so I see the hulls before they ship. Sustained freezing can kill stored-product insects and their eggs. [University of Alaska Fairbanks Extension explains one freezing method](https://www.uaf.edu/ces/publications/database/insects-pests/pantry-pests.php). I don't expect live bugs in this stock, but winter storage is not a guarantee that every bag is insect-free. If you find live insects, contact me before using the fill. Eligible returns are accepted within 30 days of receipt for unused hulls in their original, unopened packaging. See the [returns policy](https://prairiefill.com/returns) for the conditions and how to start a return. ##### Are there allergy concerns? Buckwheat hulls are a natural agricultural material. Prairie Fill hulls are air-cleaned and screened to reduce dust and small fragments, but small amounts of natural field dust may remain. If you have buckwheat, dust, or bedding-material allergies, ask a qualified healthcare professional whether this fill is appropriate for you. ##### Do buckwheat hulls make noise? Buckwheat hulls make a soft, natural rustling sound when they shift, similar to dry leaves. The sound is part of how the loose hulls move and mold around you. Compare quieter alternatives in our [fill material guide](https://prairiefill.com/guide-hull-comparison). #### Fill amounts 2 common questions ##### How much fill do I need? The amount depends on the dimensions of your pillow, cushion, or project and how firm you want it. Use our [fill calculator](https://prairiefill.com/calculator) for a transparent estimate based on an approximate fill density of 10 to 11 pounds per cubic foot. See the [zafu guide](https://prairiefill.com/blog-zafu) for meditation cushions or the [bulk guide](https://prairiefill.com/guide-bulk-hulls) for multiple items. ##### Is there a bulk discount? We do not publish a separate bulk-discount schedule. You can order multiple 6 lb or 8 lb packs at the listed prices. For a larger project, [contact us](https://prairiefill.com/contact) with the amount you need and we will tell you honestly whether Prairie Fill is a practical fit. #### Care 2 common questions ##### Are buckwheat hulls washable? No. Buckwheat hulls should stay dry. Empty all hulls from a pillow or cushion before washing its cover or liner. Hulls that become soaked can lose their useful texture and should be replaced. Follow the full [buckwheat pillow washing guide](https://prairiefill.com/blog-wash). ##### How long do buckwheat hulls last? Kept dry and protected inside a sound liner, buckwheat hull fill can remain useful for years. Hulls gradually polish and compress with use, so you can refresh the feel by adding a small amount of new fill when needed. #### Shipping & returns 2 common questions ##### Do you ship to my state, and how fast? Standard ground shipping is included in the displayed product price for the lower 48 states except North Dakota, and our current checkout adds no separate shipping charge. Prairie Fill ships from North Dakota but does not sell or ship to North Dakota. We also do not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, US territories, or international destinations. Focus is always visible as a high-contrast outline, never suppressed, and a "Skip to content" link is the first stop on every page. #### Screen Readers Pages use real headings and landmarks rather than styled text. Form fields have permanent labels, errors are tied to their field, and changes that happen without a page load -- adding to the cart, checkout status -- are announced through live regions. #### Text and Contrast Body and interface text is chosen to clear the 4.5:1 contrast ratio against its background. Our terracotta accent does not meet that bar at small sizes, so it is used for decoration only, never for text you need to read. #### Images and Motion Photographs carry descriptive alternative text and purely decorative art is hidden from assistive technology. If your system asks for reduced motion, animations and transitions are turned off. Nothing on this site flashes, auto-plays, or moves on a timer. #### Zoom and Small Screens Text can be enlarged to 200% and the layout reflows to a single column without losing content or requiring horizontal scrolling. Fonts are served from our own server, so pages stay readable even when outside resources are blocked. #### Known Limitations The card entry field at checkout is supplied by Stripe inside a secure frame; we control its size, colors, and labels, but not the markup within it. We also have no formal audit or user testing with assistive technology yet. Both are honest gaps, not oversights we are hiding. If any part of this site keeps you from finding what you need or completing an order, please tell us -- email support@prairiefill.com or call [(701) 732-0799](tel:+17017320799). Describe the page and what went wrong and we will reply within two business days. If a barrier stands between you and an order, we will simply take that order over the phone or by email while we fix it.
